"Love of Money" is a throwaway showcase for Jane and Drysdale ( Nancy Kulp and Raymond Bailey), and the show's theme song appears twice, in its opening and closing versions. The real surprise is Irene Ryan ("Granny"), who negotiates her solo turns with spunk a few songs that describe her medicinal tonics and country cooking feature her prominently. Ebsen and Manners collaborated on "Back Home U.S.A.," a straightforward, Western swing-style song that is the album's high point, and Ebsen alone wrote "A Long Talk With That Boy." Donna Douglas and Max Baer are miserable singers who would be utterly lost if not for the over-the-top novelty material that allows them to squeak by in character. more complex than Hillbilly, complex chord forms borrowed from jazz, hooks and riffs replace melody as primary structure. who played and sang the songs to demonstrate them to customers. Actor Buddy Ebsen, no stranger to the recording studio after his stint as sidekick to Fess Parker's Davy Crockett in the mid-'50s, really shines on this outing as the only credible vocalist and as a competent songwriter.
